I’d like to see Google Passkeys as a topic for a Button/YouTube show.
While it seems straightforward, I’m not confident how it will work among all my devices: Macbook Air, Chromebook, iPad mini, Pixel phone, and WITH four different Google accounts. Where does the passkey(s) reside? Is the phone the “key”?
At least to me, it’s not as straightforward as I’d hoped
Hey Robin,
Good idea. I will start working on a Button show about passkeys.
I agree they’re not as straightforward as they sound. The ‘key’ to me is that they are hardware based. It’s kind of like they combined the password and 2-factor-authentication into one step with the device – if you can unlock the device, you must be you.
What confuses me is the fact that I’ve been unlocking my iPhone and my Samsung with fingerprints, and my computer with face recognition for quite some time and that gets me into my accounts on that device. It’s hard to tell what exactly has changed with the advent of passkeys. I might reach out to you on a zoom call to see if we can figure it out together.
later …
