I have a question which has undoubtedly been asked before but you know me and ‘puters by now. Is it required to buy a new SAndT every year? I have the 2011 version and, well, to say it nicely, we don’t get along. Tried to update it and it won’t let me, etc. Tried to download the POI files and “it won’t let me”. If I can’t get along with a two year old how can I manage a newborn. So to say. Any ideas?
I do enjoy our lessons, what I can understand of them. Keep up the good work…. BTW, thanks to you just started a blog for our Alaskan trip, if I can get it to work, it will be fun..
Chuck,
No, it is not required to buy the new version of S&T each time one is released. But, that is the way you get updated maps – so it is advisable. There’s not a whole lot of difference between the operations of 2011 and 2013 but there are a lot of new roads.
As for the POI Megafile, you do need to download the file that is meant for your version. The newest POI Megafile won’t work on an older version of S&T. All the prior versions are on this downolad page.
Congratulations on your blog! And, please, any lessons you have question about, do ask it here. That’s the best way to clear things up.
Glad to hear you will be blogging about your trip. I’m sure you will have fun.
Unlike many GPS devices, a new Streets & Trips program is the only way Microsoft updates the road map. There are construction updates included. You need an Internet connection to get these. The price of the program is less than $40. Most people will skip a version to save a bit of money.
The free POI Megafile is updated several times a year. It is important to get the correct file. The 2013 version will not work with your 2011 version. There was never a 2012 version. These are pushpin sets and not road map updates.

I really don’t use S & T as much as I do TL Directory Campground Navigator. I guess the main reason is that every trip involves Camping and the TLDCN shows all the campgrounds near where I am going which really makes it convenient. I don’t know if you are familiar with the program but they are both dated 2011. I won the S & T with the GPS, but could never get the GPS to work, so I stuck with TLDDCN. Thanks for the information. :):)
I’m not familiar with TL Directory Campground Navigator, and I’m a big believer that the best program is the one you know how to use!
Just want you to know that you can see all the campgrounds near an area using S&T as well. If you’re interested, watch these videos:

Hello again,
Been looking at the map on S&T. When you ask for locations, the map disappears under them. I think I read somewhere that you can reduce that somewhat. The program I use does not have a 2013 version yet and S&T does so I am checking it out. There can’t be to much difference between the two programs. One thing I got was a crayon type thing that would draw lines anywhere I would move the cursor. Can’t finger out how to stop that and it is a little distracting.
I also think you said somewhere you can put a map from this on our blog? Or is that just Google?
I am going to play with S&T some more. I should have time to learn a little before we leave.
Thanks again for your help..
To put a map from S&T in your blog, there’s a couple of different ways. Streets and Trips make is very easy to convert your currently viewed map to a .jpg picture. You can just use Edit Copy, or Edit Copy Map. But, then you need to Paste it somewhere – like a PowerPoint slide, or a word document. If you use Live Writer to do your blogs, you can use Edit Paste there. But if you use Blogger directly online then you need a .jpg file to upload.
S&T will send a .jpg thru email with the command File->Send To->Mail Recipient (as picture) … then just send it to yourself.
You’ll still need to know how to save it from your email as a .jpg on your computer.
I find the easiest way is just to use Picasa’s screen capture capability. If you have Picasa open and you just press the PrtSc key, voila! your screen is now a picture that you can see in your Picasa library and use like any other picture. Here’s a tutorial video on exactly how to do this: Making a Map with Screen Capture.

Thanks
WoW! What a trip you have planned!
The blog is looking great. YOu will be SO happy to have this record of your trip when it’s over. Did you know you can even print a book of your blog posts? It’s a service by http://www.blog2print.com
Personally, I like making the pictures bigger – I used to use the “Large” designation, now I use “Extra Large” … Like the size of your map – you can really see that. I like that you’re using the caption on pictures.
You probably want to widen the center column so your map doesn’t color outside the lines. Watch this video: Blogger Template Designer
