I’m sadly weaning my self off of picasa. My wife and I each have pixel 3 phones and one camera with which we take photos. The phone photos get automatically pushed into google photos (separate accounts). I normally upload the camera pics directly onto the computer. I used to pull all photos together into picasa but that is getting pretty complicated. I would like to make albums using photos from all three of these sources. Is there a reasonable way to do this with google photos? thx.
Yes, absolutely. That’s just what I do – our photo albums get their photos from my phone, Jim’s phone, and a regular camera. If you are the photo manager in the family, here’s what you do:
- Make sure to notice what Google Account address is being used by your phone’s Google Photos (3-line menu, Settings, Back up and sync)
- Using the computer, go to photos.google.com and be sure you’re logged in with the same account. Now you can use the Upload button to bring photos in to your Google account from your computer
- To get your wife’s photos, use the Shared Library feature in Google photos. From her phone, tap 3-line menu, Settings, Shared Libraries, share entire library with your account. From your phone, accept the invitation from her and decide whether you want any of her photos automatically copied to your account. Even without copying automatically, you will be able to see all of her photos and manually copy the ones you want. Here’s the official google help page on shared libraries.

Thank you for this great information. I’m working my way through your book on google photos. With that said, I’m afraid that I moved forward before I knew what I was doing and I have a bit of a mess to clean up. In particular, for years I’ve been using Picasa web albums and all those photos are in google photos – but low res pictures (~2mp). There are also better versions that I think were moved by google backup. And finally there are versions that were edited by picasa and also unedited versions. 2, 3, even 4 copies of most pictures. yuk!
The good news is that nothing is lost (yet). I want to clean this up but carefully. I’m pretty confident that I have everything I care about on the computer (and a couple backups). I think I’d like to wipe out what is in google photos now and start from scratch. Then, “save” all the edits for all the picasa folders and let backup & synch do its thing again. I’m very nervous about getting the detailed steps and ordering right. Maybe safer to start with a new google account…
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
It is not easy to delete all content and start over. I think if it were me, I’d start a new account. Then, when it has everything and you’re happy with it – you can work at deleting all from your current account, then transfer from new to old. The transfer is surprisingly easy – use the shared library feature with automatic save of everything. See p. 105 in the book.
