I’m confused. In Google Drive on my PC (on the left side) there is a list with “My Drive” at the top and 4 lines below that is “Google Photos”. If I open the “Google Photos” option I see many, but not all, of the photos that I see when I use Google Photos directly (without Google Drive). Is this normal? Did I mess up with “backup and sync” on my PC, and, if so, what can I do to correct this situation? Are all these photos stored in Google Drive as well as in Google Photos? I hope this makes sense. Thanks!
No – it doesn’t make sense 🙂 But, that’s not your fault! the relationship between Google drive and Google photos, especially with the new Backup and Sync utility, is muddy at best.
When you go to Drive.Google.com and log in with your account, you will see 2 places for Google Photos
- Under My Drive, there is a folder for Google Photos IF you have turned on the setting for “Create a Google Photos Folder”
- A top level listing for Google PHotos with the Google Photos logo at the left – this is a view into your Google Photos from Drive
The folder in #1 can be manipulated – pictures moved to other folders in Google Drive, whole folders deleted etc. So, yes, it could be a subset of your entire Google PHotos library.
The view in #2 is a category of files – all the Google Photos files. Somewhere under the hood, there is only one file actually stored, but it shows up in both Drive and Photos.
If you are using Backup and Sync, I highly recommend that you specify individual folders of pictures to backup. I show what I mean by that in this segment of Episode 125 of our Button show. Start viewing the show here and watch for about 7 minutes to see if that helps.
Let me know and we’ll continue the conversation.

Thanks for your response.
I am using Backup and Sync.
I don’t have #1 because I didn’t create the folder.
#2 doesn’t show all the photos and all the edits that I have in Google Photos (photos.google.com), however, all is as it should be in Google Photos on my PC and on my phone, just not in Drive.
I think I will just ignore #2 since I have everything I need without it.
Since you said there is only 1 of each photo actually stored, I won’t be concerned about storage.
The only other concern I have is duplicate photos in Google Photos and I probably caused this myself with backup and sync. I understand from Google Photos help that I have to manually go through all 14,000 plus photos and delete the duplicates. I will probably ignore the duplicates.
I wish Google would make it possible for me to upload an album from Photos to a photo printing service and to find and delete duplicates easily.
Thanks for your help and I enjoy your videos etc. especially about Maps and Photos.
