When Backup & Sync autostarts, it begins with the photos it has already backed up. I have yet to get a backup of my entire photo library, inspite of letting the app run for literally hours. How can I change it to only backup the photos that have not been backed up? Also, Backup is showing that I have over 40,000 photos, but on my computer I have just over 9000.

I am using a MacBook.

Page,

I need to dig into a bit more information before I can help.

  1. Do you have the latest version of Backup and Sync? Click the icon for B&S at the top of your screen, 3-dot menu then About. It should be 3.37….
  2. Where are you looking to see if your photos are getting backed up? Photos.google.com? or Drive.google.com?
  3. What folders have been selected to backup? Click the icon for B&S, 3-dot menu, Preferences. Under My Macbook, choose folders what all is checked? Do you by chance have a Photos library and an iPhoto library?
  4. At the bottom of that preferences screen, under Google Photos, is the box checked to upload newly added photos?

    2. It defaults to my pictures folder, which holds all my photos. I have less than 10,000 photos.

I hope you and Mr. Geek had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Thanks for your responses.

The Backup and Sync software is too complicated! It combines what used to be Google Drive as well as what used to be Google Photos Desktop uploader.

I’m not sure what is happening with you … but my guess is that it lies with the fact that it is uploading anything on your computer referenced by “Photos”  My suggestion is to change the setting of what folders t backup. Instead of the checkbox for all Pictures – uncheck that and, instead click on Choose Folders. See if you can find the one spot where your photos are located. Usually in the Photos library.

I’ll do a little video on this later.

Meanwhile – do you see lots of duplicates when you view your google photos? Also try going to your Google Account dashboard (https://myaccount.google.com/dashboard) scroll till you see Google Photos and see how many photos are reported there. Sometimes the Backup and Sync numbers are way off.

Thank you.

I am getting duplicates.  Dashboard says I have 14, 111 photos. There are not that many on my computer.

I have saved my photos into subfiles on my computer.  Is it possible to select multiple subfiles to back up, so that Google Photos does not try to upload from the “all photos” file as well as the subfiles?

Yes, you can UNcheck the Pictures folder and then click on “Choose Folder” and find just the one folder – or subfolder – that you want to upload.

You may need to delete lots of the pictures that were recently uploaded. You can see them sorted by upload date by clicking on the search field, then Show More, then Recently added.
