I know that I can email a .pdf as an attachment to myself. Is there a way that I can store that .pdf somewhere on the iPhone (not attached to the email) so I can bring it up to read at anytime?

Sure! You can save the .pdf document to any of the cloud storage services (Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.) and open them from their respective apps on your iPhone. Or – you can save to iBooks. Lots of different ways, but, if you emailed it to yourself, you can then
- open the .pdf file
- tap the share button
- choose Books, or Drive, or Dropbox
- Or choose Files, then you have more choices – like saving to device or iCloud Drive
