I’m having Picasa withdrawal & must learn about Google Photos / Google+ or whatever they’re calling it this week!

For the time being I’m just storing them on SD cards till I can figure out the simplest & best way!

Going out of the country Tuesday and concerned about backing them up – in case something happens to the card or phone.

Any suggestions!?

Thx!Frown

Thanks!

Bon Chance!!

Yep! My suggestion is Google Photos!

Here’s an article for getting started.

And, here are all the tutorial videos for Google Photos

In your case, with a new Samsung phone, it probably came with Google Photos pre-installed. Just look for the multicolored pinwheel icon and open it. Check that it is using your correct Google Account and that Autobackup is turned on. Go to a computer and photos.google.com and see if all your pictures are there!

For all past pictures stored on SD card, you will need to insert that into a computer and then upload to Google Photos from there. This video should help with that:

Beginner’s luck – everything’s there and backed up to Google photos – appreciate all the help!!

Now just have to learn how to share – don’t always play well with others!!;))

My bet is that Google Photos has given you some presents in the Assistant. Have you checked?

Open Google Photos on your phone, click the first button at the bottom – Assistant. See if it has some collages, albums, animations, or movies for you. Let us know!

Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes!  Assistant is pretty neat – love the still made in to ‘videos’!!

However, I’m still groveling in a quagmire of ineptitude!!

Trying to backup my S7 to my PC!  Seems the only option is use Kies 3 or put the SD card in a USB adapter and copy each file to the PC.

On import pictures and videos, it tells me there are no new ones!  It’s got a bunch!!

Kies3 is impossible!! It says it’s installing drivers and the says there are none!  Then when connecting with a USB you must set the connection mode to the media device (MTP) – nowhere to be found!

Unlock:  You can only unlock the device on the device itself!  Are the talking about when I open it with my fingerprint?  Otherwise I see nothing about unlocking!!

Grrrrrrrr!!!

Good news is – if my pics are on Google Photos and on my PC and/or S7, I don’t need to be concerned about backing them up – right!?

Thanks!

Bon Chance!!

I am confident that you can back up your photos from your phone directly to your PC, there are just a couple of little gotcha’s:

  1. Unlock: – yes! unlock simply means using your fingerprint, or entering your code, to unlock the device itself. The phone must be unlocked before transfers can happen
  2. USB must be set to MTP. To do this your phone must be connected to your computer via USB. Then, drag down from the top of your screen to reveal notifications. You should see one that has the USB logo at the left and reads: “USB Charging: Tap here for more options.”  On the next screen you can select the option for Photo Transfer.

usb-options.JPGImage Enlarger

Now the “nothing to import” message should go away and you’ll see it start to find and import photos.

Let me know how it goes.

Well, as per usual, mine is not your everyday, run-of-the-mill, KISS problem!

Did!  No USB icon – so therefore no access to “USB Charging: Tap….”, etc.  Even did the developer thing!  Nothing!!

Who knew that some USB cables will only charge – not transfer stuff to your PC!  Just bought a 6′ for convenience so I don’t have to lean against the wall to use while it’s charging!!  Try returning it! LOL! Just another tuition for learning something new!!
You have to use the one that came with it!!  OK!  Still nothing!
Last resort – do a factory reset – again!!!

Any alternative suggestions before I Hari Kari this S7 & me!?

Grrrrrrrrr!!!CryEmbarassedConfused

Thanks!

You may be hearing from a bunch of guy on DisQus.
While I was suicidal and looking for lifejackets, I found a thread about this and seems I’m not the only one having this USB/MTP dilemma!
They worked their way thru it by the time I got there – but I told ’em if they wanted the ‘The Facts, Ma’am!  Just the Facts!’, to check y’all out!!

Thanks again!!

Made my Month!!!;))

Merry CHRISTmas to me – and ya’ll!!!;))

OK, I’m Baaaaaacccckkkk!

Don’t know how you guys keep up!  Y’all do an amazing job!!

Still groveling in this quagmire (s7 photo transfer) of ineptitude!

Back from 2017 vacation and more pics!  Still trying to resolve last years issues!!  Still DnC (Dazed & Confused) – even more so since cloud and now Drop Box!!  A few questions, if I may:

1. Cloud, or Assistant, says I can gain space on my S7 by deleting suggested pics.  Thought the Cloud only had pics that were located on my devices – if I deleted from device – they’d delete from cloud.

2. Smart Switch has worked OK, getting pic copies to PC (I never ‘Move’ pics after losing 500 of Mont St Michel – they couldn’t be found on the card, phone or PC afterward)!  So, what happens in Drop Box after you ‘Move’ them to the PC, are they still in the phone?

3. Drop Box vs Smart Switch:  I guess what threw me was including Picasa!  I haven’t been on here in a while and last I checked Picasa was passe – it would never be upgraded – now it’s used as part of Drop Box!

4. Cloud: If pics stand on their own, are they just duplicates of ones from your devices.  If I edit a pic on my PC, is it added to Cloud as a new pic, or is the Cloud one changed also!?

5. Cloud:  If I have a picture on my SD card in my S7 and it is showing in my Cloud, is it safe to delete or should I copy to my PC for backup?

6. Drop Box vs Cloud: What can I do with Drop Box that I can’t do with Cloud!?

I know, I’m only allowed 3 ‘Free’ questions – so if it would be better to post seperately – let me know!Confused

Thanks!

Bon Chance!!

Hello Jim! or should I say, “Dear DnC – Dazed and Confused,”

That’s a lot of questions! All good ones. And I believe that most of them would be cleared up with a better understanding of the concept called “cloud.”  When I use the term “cloud” I’m referring generically to the web, online … i.e. not on your device. You can have many accounts in the “cloud” where stuff is stored. I have photos stored in my Google Photos account – that’s in “the cloud.” I have photos stored in my Dropbox account – that’s in “the cloud.” When something is stored in the cloud – that is a separate copy than the one that is on your device. You can delete the one from your device and still see the copy that exists in the cloud. But, you have to make sure that you’re using a tool that deletes just from your device – that it does not synchronize the deletion thru to the cloud copy.

You seem to be using cloud as referencing a specific account – maybe Apple’s iCloud? or Maybe the Verizon “Cloud” service? I need to know exactly what “cloud” you’re referring to in order to answer.

If you’re using Google Photos, read this article and see if it helps: Google Photos is not a Backup

What is smart switch?

And, where do you get that Drop Box is now using Picasa? I still use Dropbox all the time, but not for my pictures. Although, I could, if I wanted use Picasa’s Folder Manager and tell it to include by Dropbox folder … is that what you’re talking about?

Working backwards on your response above:

I saw, or thought I saw, a Q&A you discussed about copying and pasting from the Dropbox folder to Picasa – still looking.  Seemed like an extra step when Picasa would do it directly from your PC or device – more on that when I find it and make sure I understood it – some really heavy lifting will be required here!!

I’m using Google Photos – period!  I’m reading Google Photos is not a Backup and that is helping – because I was under the mistaken impression GP Cloud was based on the pics in your device and if you deleted any in device it did so in the cloud – more later as I evolve!

Then I see this: Automatic method: use another cloud storage service like Dropbox, or OneDrive, or Amazon Cloud. I use OneDrive. Just download the OneDrive app to your phone, go into settings, and turn on Camera Upload. That automatically uploads a copy of every photo to my Microsoft OneDrive account.

Good grief – I don’t understand why you have so many different ones – to do what i can do with Picasa and/or GPC!  I understand, NOW, it’s not a backup – I have that on my externals – and getting them there has been my biggest concern and all the more imperitive that i get them there asap!!  I can organize and share, et als, as soon as I know that is done!!

Samsung Smart Switch is what i tried after trying to wean myself from Picasa and it’s demise – or should I say abandonment!  Like my Auto Enthusiast days of putting something back together and having parts left over!  SSS always had more questions than it answered!!   http://www.samsung.com/us/smart-switch/

Prior to that I had dabbled with Samsung Kies.  What a nightmare!! http://www.samsung.com/us/supp…..s/app/kies

During all this, I learned that all USB cables are not created equally!  El Cheapos do not handle data nor transfer pictures without uncertainties & surprises!!

So, there you have it – not necessarily in a small (sorry, I know you have plenty to read!) nutshell – but that’s my dilemma!

jimConfused

ps….another (paranoid, i know!) concern!  Say, I use GPC for all my edits, albums, etc. – and they go away (never too big to fail, remember!?) – all my work would have been for naught and no backups!!  Just sayin’!YellCry

Thanks!

Bon Chance!!

Hey Jim,

Please review the chapter 11 on Workflow in the book. Pay special attention to the flowchart on p. 88. Basically I use these steps:

  1. Gather all photos (from all devices past and present) to your Google Photos account
  2. For photos taken with smartphone, I also backup to OneDrive, then delete from phone. Now, I have my pictures in Google PHotos, my phone space is freed up, but I also have the photos in OneDrive just in case anything happens to my Google Photos
  3. I do all work with my photos using Google Photos, explore, edit, create animations, movies, etc.
  4. My best photos go into an album for each month.
  5. I download those albums to my computer, so I have my best photos, edited, on my computer – preferably an external hardrive. Picasa can access those photos if I want.

The dropbox video you’re referring to is linked below. This is how I got photos from my phone to my computer and Picasa before Google Photos.

If you follow steps 1-5 above, it should address all your concerns.

Good Morning from DnC in SC!

Last we visited I had asked the question about ‘something’ (phone, GooglePhotos, cloud – I know not!) telling me I have a couple of thousand photos that are backed up and I can delete from S7 to free space.

Fine – but there are a bunch more on my phone that show up in GPs – why does it say only 2000 are backed up to GPs?

Studying Workflow and your other of your amazing ‘Tuts’, but just can’t wrap my brain around this!

Also, if you take a pic, GP gets it, later you transfer that SD to your PC external just to make sure it’s backed up – does GPs ignore duplicates or just keeps adding additional copies to the cloud?

Thx!

Hope y’all have a great Labor Day Weekend!!

jim, 1RCS

Thanks!

1. you see more than the 2,000 that is reported to be backed up.

Could it be that the additional photos came from your computer? If you used Picasa and Picasa Web Albums previously – all those photos are in your Google Photos. If that’s not it, ask again, I may not have understood.

2. If phone pictures are backed up to Google Photos, then also copied to computer, does Google Photos get them from computer also and create duplicates in your account?

It shouldn’t backup the exact same photo, but Google Photos has a very narrow definition of “exact same.” I would keep a close watch on it, and if duplicates appear, I would change the folders being watched on the computer so that the photos originating from your phone aren’t being watched.

Labor Day – going diving! Hope you have a good one too.
