I have a HTC One smartphone, and I received a text message that someone tried to use my password to get into my email. It made me change my password, which I did. Now I get an error message that states “Google sign-in attempt prevented”. There is some other language in the message that states that this is from an app that doesn’t meet modern security standards, and they strongly recommend that I use a secure app, like Gmail, to access my account. I am using Gmail. I put in my new password, and this message does not go away. I am getting all my email on my phone. The only thing I am prevented from doing is sending an email through the camera (if I wanted to send a picture I just took). I have to go to my e-mail, and attach the photo. Any solutions to removing this error? My phone always has the refresh icon with an exclamation mark in the top pull down menu.
The other issue I have, which has always been the case with this phone, is the GPS is off. If I use Google Maps or Waze, the location it shows me at is out in a field but kind of near my actual location, or it is just so slow to update to get close to where I am actually located. I have compared settings with other phones that are the exact same model, and the settings are the same but no luck.
Thank You for any ideas and help! I am thinking of visiting the Verizon store and scrapping this phone. I am close to my contract date.
I would be VERY suspicious of a text message saying anything about your password. If you followed a link in the text message directly, it may have been a scam. When you send an email from the camera app, you click the share icon and then select your email icon … is it the red envelope/Gmail icon that you choose here? Sounds like that’s the spot that something is screwed up.
I would go to a computer and gmail.com and try to log in there, probably with your old password. Then use the settings there to change your password now. Then I would uninstall/reinstall Gmail on your phone. If that doesn’t work, I would do a factory reset on your phone to clean it up … this is like getting a new phone, make sure all your important data is backed up or accessible thru a cloud service. We did one of our weekly shows on how to do a factory reset: #61 w/Notes and Links
As for GPS: the main setting is in your Settings->Personal: Location. Make sure that is on. Then also, and “Mode” should be set to High Accuracy. On that same screen scrolling down, do you see any apps listed under Recent location requests?
