Camera uploads is a special sub-folder of Dropbox, but, yes it gets sent to all the devices linked to that account. Did you watch this video: Dropbox Camera Uploads and Picasa
In it, I show how I use the Camera Uploads just as temporary transfer. I empty it out when I’m done.
Also, even though you see the Camera Uploads photo thumbnails in any mobile device with Dropbox on the same account, the full photo doesn’t get downloaded to that device until you click on it to view the full picture.

Yes that does help. I was concerned with amount of data being moved about even using WiFi only. Your note about only thumbnails unless you view has eased my mind. And I plan to do as you do, and use the Dropbox folder as temporary storage only.
