Wondered why my internet was so slow and found that Verizon had slowed me down because I had used all of my 30 gigs in 15 days! We don’t stream video. We just surf and rarely play a You Tube of any kind. We did a trip of 5 hours each way and ran Maps plus some in Charleston finding places. I listen to XM 1 morning a week and have done that for ages.

We have never used so much data! We’ve used the S7 on a hot spot but no more than in the past but System says that went up on 15 Nov and then yesterday spiked even higher when we listened to songs on Amazon Music in the afternoon.

I bought 10 more gigs. Any suggestions on what has gone wrong?  Thanks

Have you looked in settings to see what App is using the most data? Settings->Data

If you just installed a photo-related app, like Google Photos, or turned on iCloud Photos, they can take a bunch of data to upload the first round of all photos/videos on your phone. Another frequent culprit is OS updates.

Maps really don’t use that much, unless you asked it to download maps locally. XM could use significant amounts, but if you’ve been doing that all along and haven’t had a problem??

You might want to review Episode 29 on Data Usage

Let me know what Settings-Data reports

Well, hmmm. I didn’t know it did all that. I missed that show.

Mobile Hotspot = 28.22 Gigs! But, I’ve not used it more than in the past. I wonder: I had Google Photos Backup on but not in the past. Why, I don’t know. I’m guessing that it thinks the Hotspot is a wifi connection and tries backups? Why would I need Backup anyway? I’ll have to scan some of your other

Facebook is only .57 and all the others less than 0.29. Amazon music only 0.04 and Maps is 0.13.

Think Backup is the culprit?  Thanks!!!!

So, your phone reports that data was being used by the phone’s Hotspot feature? If it was Google Photos using the data, it would report Google Photos.

I forget – are you using iPhone or Android? I ask because iPhone does not reset the statistics each month, so you could be looking at a number that represents several months worth of usage.

If it is your phone’s mobile hotspot that is being used, then it is being used by your computer, or a tablet? If a computer, do you have the Google PHotos Backup running on that? Yes – that could be a bad culprit, it would be uploading all the photos on your computer – and you’re right, the computer would see it as WiFi. If it’s a windows computer, you can specify that the hotspot is “metered” data, and it will limit usage.

Thanks Mrs Geek! I use my S7 Android as the hotspot. I connect my Win 10 Laptop to it and it had Photos Backup running. I forget why I did that…maybe something I read here? Anyway, as you described it I think the Backup on the laptop was eating the data. I disabled it.
