We have Droid cell phones.  My husband is thinking of getting an Apple WiFi Ipad.  Will a Droid X tethered to an Ipad work the same as a tethered laptop??  I don't even know if the Ipad has a USB port or an app for PDAnet.

Thanks.

PS – I have a new Droid Rzr and really like it.

I have not seen any app that allows wired tethering from a Droid to an iPad the way we tether to our laptops.

There are several apps out that allow you to make the Droid X a WiFi hotspot without paying Verizon extra $.  The ones I saw all required you to “root” the phone.  That is not a difficult thing to do, but it does mean that updates to the phone from Verizon may mess you up.  Then you need to go through the process again.  Here is a link to a How To

If you have an unlimited data plan with Verizon, you might want to pay the $30 month to Verizon and make your Razr the WiFi hotspot.  Then you can connect your iPad and computers wirelessly and have the 4G speeds when available.

Thanks.  I don't know how Verizon's $30 hotspot works.  Is there a monthly data limit?  Can it be turned on and off?

Our Autonet mobile router contract runs out next month.  You pay $30 a month for only 1GB of 3G.  Now that we have Droid phones, with unlimited date,  I'll just tether my laptop.  But a Verizon hotspot would be convenient.

On your phone, there is a setting in Wireless and Networks for using your device as a WiFi Hotspot.  There are some configuration settings and you must agree to terms and conditions.

This is how I understand the tethering with Verizon:

If you have an unlimited 4G data plan, it will cost an additional $30/mo to make your phone a WiFi hotspot and you will not be limited to the amount of data you use on the 3G or 4G network.  You can turn it on and off.

If you have a limited data plan, it will cost you $20/mo for an additional 2GB and you can then make your phone a WiFi hotspot.  If you go over your limit, you will be charged $10/GB

Unlimited data plans are no longer available from Verizon.  You would need to be “grandfathered in” with a contract before 7/7/11.  It can be confusing.  It is always best to check with Verizon directly.

I am not currently using my Droid Razr as a hotspot because I already pay $60/mo for our 4G mobile hotspot.  When that contract is complete, I probably will set it up.
