Recently purchased a newer Dell PC and need to transfer many old programs and their files from old HP PC to it  Both run win 7.

Do not want everything from old PC transferred.

That’s not a simple matter – wiping out a computer and keeping it blank is easy, making an image backup to make a new computer exactly like an old one is fairly easy, but selectively copying files and programs is not easy.

You will need the original installation files for each program you want on the new computer. If they were downloaded from a website, you’ll need the username and password for the website in order to reinstall on the new computer.

My recommendation would be to find a geek you trust – maybe at Best Buy Geek Squad and give them very explicit instructions of what you want and what you don’t.

Hi Mrs Geek,

OK, still want to move many files from old HP PC to new Dell PC.  Been reading about “homegroups”.  Both computers are in the same room, couldn’t I connect them by wifi or ethernet cable?  Then select files I want to share, then delete the rest on the old computer.

What am I missing here,

Jay

Yes, of course, that can be done. But, if you’ve never done it before you may lack the confidence. That is why we recommend going to Best Buy. Or some other service.

Data file are easy – transferring programs requires a lot more understanding.
