In standby mode, Google Chromecast uses roughly 15 GB of Wi-Fi per month. That is a lot of data if you are on a limited plan.
4K streaming amounts to 7.9 GB per hour, while 1080p HD and 720p HD will consume 1.5 and .9 GB per hour, respectively. Streaming music uses less.
Even if your TV set is off, a powered-on Chromecast will run background or screensaver images, using available data as it goes.
TVs don’t generally supply power to their ports when turned off. If you are powering the Chromecast from the TV’s USB port, check to see if the power light is on for the device.
