Hello Mrs. Geeks, I need help. I Googled for answers and they make sense but when I try to execute them on my iPad everything looks different.
First, does Google+ now replace Picasa or do both still exist?
I want to send a photo album to members of my family but most of them are not Google members. I have created a “Family” circle but so far have not figured out how to add non-Google contacts to this circle. I am tired of typing in the e-mail addresses every time.
I have tried iPhoto for the same function but was told by several family members that they could not see the photos.
I also tried Dropbox. It is supposed to be very simple but it sure gave me the run-around.
What do you suggest is the easiest way to share photos from my iPhone with friends and family?

First, does Google+ now replace Picasa or do both still exist?
It’s all in flux and there is no agreement on what to call it! But … Google+ is the way to share pictures online now. In the Google world anyway. Picasa is software on your computer. Picasa Web Albums is the old way of sharing and it is still there.
You can definitely have non-google members in one of your circles. Before telling you more on how to do it, tell me if you have a computer too? Lots of the set up is easier on a computer than on the iPad. Also, if you use all Apple devices, you may want to use the iCloud shared photos for this.
So, tell me a bit more, and we’ll go from there.

Thank you, Mrs. Geek. I have an old Dell Laptop but it is on the way to the graveyard and now has limited functions.
I am thinking about buying a new computer but am undecided whether to go all Apple (I already have an iPhone and iPad). Logically, all Apple would probably make the most sense, financially I like the cheaper PC world. Any recommendation? Maybe if I get a new computer first, the solution to my original question will be much easier.

The reason I asked was just to consider what instructions to give. I think I should give iPad instructions.
But, as long as you’re talking about getting a new computer, I will throw in my 2 cents. It does make sense to complete your family of Apple products with an Apple computer. When you have all Apple products and an Apple ID, there’s all sorts of synchronizing that happens automatically.

I’m saying that’s a good thing and a bad thing. And, not only does the Apple computer cost more than PC, but many of the cloud-based services are more expensive as well.
IF you had Macs in the past and are comfortable with them, I still think that is the right way to go. However, it sounds like you’re already accustomed to Windows PCs … for my money a Windows PC is just fine, and Dropbox, or OneDrive, or Google Drive gives me perfectly good ways to keep data sync’ed among my devices.
OK, back to your original question, how to add non-Google contacts to Google+ Circles. … on the iPad …
- Use the Google+ App (get it from the App store if you don’t have it)
- Tap the 3-line menu at upper left and choose People
- Swipe up … looking lower on the screen … till you see your list of Circles
OMG … in going thru this on my iPad, I’ve discovered it can’t be done!! It’s very easy on a computer, impossible on mobile devices. WOW- good to know.
On a computer (anyone’s computer … just log into plus.google.com with your google account and log out when you’re done … click the menu (at left where it says ‘Home’) and choose People. Find the desired circle and the first option is a gray box to add a person, click there and you can enter any email address you want. From now on, you can share to that circle with your iPad, you just can’t add to the circle using the iPad.
You may prefer using Dropbox, I’ll write the next post with those instructions.
