They can go automatically, but it is important for you to check. Sometimes, the app needs to be opened to give the message to your phone that there are uploads waiting. Sometimes, it requires Wi-Fi and your phone is not connected.
So, on your phone – open the Google PHotos app and tap on the account button (your little face in the upper right corner) you should see a message about what is or is not being uploaded. If it says, “Waiting for Wi-Fi” then you need to connect your phone to wifi and they will start uploading.
