Transferring from Flash drive to computer

I just bought a new computer and decided to transfer all my pictures to the new computer from my flash drive.  When the pictures were down loaded I noticed that many had been put in the wrong date folders.  Really all over the place even in different years.  Is this normal or did I do something wrong.

Need more info:

Were they in folders on your flash drive?

What procedure did you use to transfer?  Windows copy and paste?  Picasa import?  or …

It has been awhile since I made the copies.  I am not sure which I used to copy.  I have copied to both CDs and Flash Drive.  The ones to the CD copied as the folders were on the computer and when I loaded them back into the computer it looked correct.  Then I imported using the Flash Drive and that is when everything went wrong.  I made sure that the duplicate box was checked and even tho I did some still copied.  Would this be because of edits?  All of this was done on the old computer.  I wish I could remember I was so new at using Picasa that I must of done something wrong.  Your videos are really a great help and I hope that in the future I will be able to straighten out the mess I made.  The reason I wanted to load them onto the computer is to back them up on the new external hard drive.  I haven't done that yet.
