Q: I had a hard drive crash with my laptop and have installed a new hard drive.  I was able to copy all of my files before removing my hard drive.  When I look at the saved pictures on the new hard drive, the pictures are still in the folders as I previously had.  My problem is when I loaded Picasa, it picked up a few of the folders as I previously had.  But  a very high percentage of the pictures came into Picasa as a single folder containing only one picture.  I now have  hundred plus folders in Picasa with folders with each having only one picture in it  I would like to get these pictures back into the previous folder with the group of pictures I originally had .  Should I unload Picasa and start over again, or ??? Got any ideas?

A: I’m not at all sure what is going on, but I do have a suspicion. Is it possible you used the Import tool to get your pictures into Picasa? And, then had the import setting to make a folder for each date?

Watch the videos in the Photo Organizing Short Course to see what I mean. Specifically #2, #4 and #6
Instead of Importing – I would either simply copy the pictures in bulk to your hard drive, then use Picasa’s Folder manager to work with them there. See the #2 video on that.

Let me know if that helps. If not, add some more details here, or we might arrange a remote session so I can see what’s going on.

  1. Forget about Picasa! Know where your pictures are WITHOUT Picasa. #232
  1. Using Folder Manager #233
  1. Your Folder System and Backups #240
  1. Importing Pictures to Named Folders #234

I have a feeling this is the same issue as you have in another forum thread – but that one says the pictures originally came from iPhoto, so maybe it is different.  In any case, Removing Picasa will NOT remove the pictures. Picasa is just a tool for working with the pictures on your computer’s hard drive. So, if you want to delete the pictures and start over again, you’ll need to go to your hard drive – using Finder if you’re on a Mac – and delete all the folders there. Then put the right ones back by using Finder to copy them from the backup device.
