Problems with pictures in blog

Hi Chris and Jim! We’ve finally started our blog–check us out at wandriantrips.blogspot.com. Escapade seminars really helped. I have 3 problems with pictures. First the top part of our blog, I finally managed to put the picture all across, because I didn’t like the parts which didn’t have the picture on it, and I could not find out how to put the description next to the picture on top. You also cannot center the text of the name of your blog or put it on 2 lines.

Once you have put a text box under the pix and then you don’t want text, how do you just remove the text box-remove the whole picture ? and start again?

I am used to My Publisher and Serif and I get very frustrated that I can’t put the pictures in where I want them, or next to each other when there is room. Do I need to make a collage in Photoshop and put the whole picture in, or can I import a PDF with text and photos?

I got it right once in draft, I thought but after I published it the pictures were all over the place.

Thanks Maryke Hines

Maryke,

Great Blog!  Especially the page where you talk about all the Geeks on Tour classes you attended!  :-)  Remember to add links!  Here’s the video for links:

It certainly IS frustrating to use Blogger if you expect it to act like a desktop publishing program.  Blogger cannot do page layout.  Think of it more like a simple text editor that can include pictures.

It seems like you are the 3d or 4th person this week to ask me about picture layout in Blogger so I plan to write a full article on this in the next newsletter.  Meanwhile, here are the high points:

  1. Do not use the Left, Right, or Center options thinking that will put one picture on the left and another on the right.  These options refer to where the picture will be in relation to Text, not other pictures.  Remove any such options from existing pictures.  Select the picture then click the “Remove Formatting” tool in the toolbar.  It’s the T with the red x at the far right of the toolbar.
  2. Just add the pictures one after the other.  No formatting, no Enter, no space.  Size them to fit – small or maybe medium
  3. Make sure your template width will fit the size of the combined pictures.  You can adjust the width of your blog using the template designer.  See this video:
  4. Realize that the Editing screen, where you create the blog is a different width than the published blog.  Pictures that don’t fit side by side while editing may work just fine once you Publish and look at the blog.
  5. If you really want to control the position of one picture relative to another, use Picasa to make a collage of the mulitple pictures first, then use the resulting collage as the picture for your blog.  Here’s the series of videos on how to make collages:
  6. If you use LiveWriter to create your blog posts, you can also add tables to position pictures

Hope that helps.

Watch for the article and maybe a new video.

Ooops, I think I only answered one of your questions.  Here’s the other two.

how to put the description next to the picture on top. You also cannot center the text of the name of your blog or put it on 2 lines.

When you added a picture in your header, you used the Layout options -> Header -> Edit.  After selecting a picture there are 4 options for what to do with the Blog name and description:

  • Behind title and description
  • Instead of title and description
  • Have description placed after the image
  • Shrink to fit

If none of those accomplish what you want, then use Picasa (or whatever photo editor you use) to add text right to the picture exactly where you want it, and choose “Instead of Title and description.”  Check out my blog http://geeksontour.blogspot.com/ to see what I mean.  I used a collage with text that I created in Picasa as the blog header, and chose to use that instead of title and description.  Be sure to watch the video in the Collage series on Banner collages to see how to size it properly.  Actually, it looks like you did this already since your blog title is in such a distinctive font – good job!

Once you have put a text box under the pix and then you don’t want text, how do you just remove the text box-remove the whole picture ? and start again?

I think you’re referring to the Caption on a picture.  When you click on any picture while editing a blog post you should see several options pop up – Small, Medium, Large, Left, Center, Right etc.  One of those options is Add caption.  Once you’ve added a caption, that option becomes “Remove Caption.”

Hope that helps
