When one of my hard drives crashed I downloaded my backed-up photos from the backup service I was using. What with them sending the photos in a multitude of zipped files that included extraneous photos and probably errors in the backup software itself, I ended up with many photos having wrong dates.

I’ve found another backup I made when I was using Picasa with most of those photos arranged in folders & subfolders by year/month/day i.e. G:/Picasa/2014/2014-10/2014-10-06/XYZ001.jpg, etc. I had Picasa re-index them and at least have a framework of where most of those other misdated photos belong. With Picasa I can change their date (year and month is close enough), upload them all to a different account of mine, and then wrangle them into Albums within GP since they’ll be approximately where they should be.

Does that make sense? For the last 20 years, I’ve gone cruising every year. I’ve traveled back and forth between Denver and Berlin every 4 months or so since 2008. While I can tell where I am in any given photo, I honestly don’t know anymore which year or month I was there.

All this is a long lead-up to the question – what’s the best (easiest) way to upload?

Should I make the date changes that are obvious, then combine all the photos in one folder by year (to get rid of the sub/sub/subfolders), and upload them in 1-year batches to GP. I could then create albums and move stragglers by informed gut feeling (i.e how grey is my hair?).

Or should I instead upload all the photos I know are correctly dated from Picasa first, using the existing tree structure, and then make the necessary date changes to the remaining pix and upload them? In other words, is there a way to upload from Picasa without having to simplify the folder structure?

Will the Picasa Tags still be accessible in Google Photos?

Sorry to hit you with such esoteric questions. I appreciate all your advice!

I like the idea of doing your best with correcting the dates while photos are on your computer, then uploading one year at a time and creating albums for those years. Belt AND Suspenders!

Picasa tags do not transfer to Google Photos – Captions transfer as descriptions.

Hope that helps
