Photo Confusion

Earlier this week I installed Google Photos on my computer, IPad and IPhone and proceeded to synch all my photos.  Part of my reasoning to do this was I continued to receive messages on my Iphone that my storage was full and therefore I wasn’t taking any more pictures.  After about 24 hours the synching was complete.  However I have two problems:

1.  On My Iphone when I try to open Google Photos I get a message “Device storage full – Unable to sync changes with your Photos library”.  If my understanding is correct the photos on Google Photos are in the cloud.  Therefore, why would the synching stop?

2.  On my Iphone when I go to open the “Mail” icon it either won’t open or opens quickly and shows “No Mail” and quickly closes.  This had never happened until I installed Google Photos and synched my photos so I believe it may have something to do with my storage issue.

Also, once my synching is complete and the above issues are resolved, can I safely delete my photos from the Apple photo icon on my devices?

Thank you!  Confused

I hear ya! Nothing is simple.

1.  On My Iphone when I try to open Google Photos I get a message “Device storage full – Unable to sync changes with your Photos library”.  If my understanding is correct the photos on Google Photos are in the cloud.  Therefore, why would the synching stop?

Even though Google Photos works with photos in the cloud instead of on the device, it still takes up substantial space in a cache to view the thumbnails of the photos even when you’re offline. So, that has added some additional content to your phone’s storage. You can limit the space used by Google Photos cache by using the 3-line menu in upper left, Settings, Manage device Storage, Limit Cache Size – turn it on.

2.  On my Iphone when I go to open the “Mail” icon it either won’t open or opens quickly and shows “No Mail” and quickly closes.  This had never happened until I installed Google Photos and synched my photos so I believe it may have something to do with my storage issue.

I’m pretty sure you’re right! You’re doing the right things, but it does sound like your phone is now completely full and something has to give. The first thing I think you should do is to see if all your photos have indeed been backed up in Google Photos. I believe in trust but verify!! To do this, go to a computer, http://www.photos.google.com and log in with the same Google Account as you use on the phone. Browse thru the photos – are they all there? Or at least up until the last day or so when you started getting the message? If so, then you can proceed to delete them from the phone.

Google Photos can easily allow you to delete the original photos from your phone, and it has one command that will do that for you. tap the 3-line menu in upper left and then Manage Device Storage and “Free Up Space.” That will delete all photos that have been backed up. On the iPhone however, they’re still not gone until you go into the Apple Photos app, Albums, Recently Deleted. You must delete them all from that place as well before your space is freed up.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Mrs. Geek:

I thought I’d give you an update on my phone/photo situation.

I did your first suggestion immediately however I wasn’t able to do anything else because whenever I tried to open anything, i.e., my Google photos, Apple photos, mail, etc., the app would immediately close.  I had decided I would need to go to an Apple Store to try and get some help.  Also, I was unable to send text messages but I was able to receive them.

However, over this past weekend everything on my phone suddenly started working correctly.  I have no idea why but I’m very pleased that it’s back to normal.

We’re planning on being at the West Springfield, Massachusetts FMCA rally and hope you’ll be there so we can attend your seminars.

Thanks again for your help!Laugh

Thanks for the update – sometimes these phones do act in mysterious ways!

We will definitely be at the FMCA rally in Mass. We’re doing 6 or 7 seminars. See you there!
