What happens on Oct 1 if I don’t do anything?

If you don’t do anything, then on October 1, your backup and sync function will stop syncing.
You may not even have backup and sync, so no big deal. If you do, then open it and look at your preferences to see what is being synced.
Do you use a google drive folder on your computer? Or do you only access i it using a web browser?

So, it sounds like you may not use Google Drive at all … Just Google Photos. You probably don’t need to do anything.
One other possibility is if you put photos from a camera directly on to your computer, then have Backup and Sync automatically upload them to Google Photos. If so, that process will need to switch to Google Drive for Desktop. If not, then you’re free and clear!
