I am very unhappy with Google’s abandoning Picasa. We have thousands of photos edited and labeled in Picasa. How do i move these to another program so that i do not have to redo the edits and labels. I cannot figure out how to back the altered photos to flash drive since they have been backed up to DVD’s. I do not want to restore to picasa, i want them readable by Faststone, Lightroom or some other program. I probably should have done save-as, but how do I do that now, and if i do will they be viewable in some other program as they appear in Picasa.

Hey Jonathan,

There really is no need for you to move to another program. For all the photos stored on my computer’s hard drive, I still use Picasa all the time to work with them.

If you do want to use another program, like Faststone, Lightroom, or the photo app that comes with Windows, you don’t need to do anything to get them into the other program. Your pictures are stored on your hard drive in some folder. Just tell the new program where that folder is. For Captions and Tags, Picasa uses pretty standard formats. I know when I view a photo on my computer using Windows Photos – I see the captions and tags that I entered using Picasa. Edits are a different story, Picasa doesn’t save the edits by default. You can save a folder at a time by using the Picasa button for Save all edits:

Thank you very much!  We do continue to use Picasa, but I want to be able to view images as edited.  The best of all worlds would to be able to read the captions. Any way to view those with the Windows Photos?

Ooops, I mispoke. I can see the caption using OneDrive, but surprisingly, no – I see no way with Windows Photos to view captions.

I used to use Windows Photo Gallery, it did captions and tags – even better in some cases than Picasa. But, it’s in the same boat as Picasa – still works, but after January 10 it is no longer supported.

I say just stick with Picasa and get into the habit of saving edits.

Thank you again. We will continue to use Picasa and hope it works a long time.

It will work until a new operating system anyway.

But, I do hope you’re starting to use Google Photos. It doesn’t replace Picasa for working with photos stored on your computer’s hard drives – but it is a total alternative for your photo library, stored in the cloud.
