More on Google + and disappearing albums

Ms. Geek,  What is happening here?  Not only to my Picasa and Google + but to your website.  First to your website.  With IE yesterday I could not navigate.  No links worked. Left click did nothing.  I was able to get to the Picasa forum by right clicking links and then clicking OPEN but could not move off the Add Topic button.  The prompts with each link came up but no action on clicking.  So today I thought of using a different browser and Firefox seems to work better.  So here is my real question.

WHAT has happened to Picasa with respect to Google +?  About two weeks ago, I made an album of 5 collages as we began our summer trip.  Used the Green Share Button.  When album was uploaded, I went to view online, did some rearranging.  All my previous albums were there.  Then, As I usually do, I sent me a copy from the web and then I resend that to friends. (I like the Picasa invitation format but I do not always have everyone’s address available when online.  And I get to check out the album on my email account, not gmail, before forwarding to all).  No problem yet.

Now it is two weeks later.  I have made more collages and want to make an album.  This time there were 17 collages.  They appeared to upload correctly and that is where the similarity ended.  When I went to view online,  I got the message that the Page was not available.  So I tried the WebAlbum link in the upper right of the screen to view all my albums along with this new one.  However, the album was  not there.  None of my albums were there, only 1 picture!  And I got a message that I had joined Google+ and now have these other Google+ people in my list.  And about 10 people with pictures and address were shown on my screen and I know none of them!!!

What happened?   Where are my albums?  There was a button that said click here to go back to Picasa Web Albums but it did nothing.

I tried accessing my picasa web site in a few other ways and finally found a few albums.  This account was for my Picasa SIG in Sun City.  I have another account for just me under a different address and I am afraid to open in because all those albums might be gone also.  What could I have done to got myself involved with Google +?  Will I ever be able to find my albums?  If I am stuck with Google+ will the old albums ever be available as before?

I guess what I need to know

1.  How can I get out from the clutches of Google +?

2.  How can I get rid of those people I do not know?

3.  Willl my old albums ever be accessible?   I know they are still there because I have a few old emails with invitations and the links are still good.

4.  The new album with 17 collages is nowhere to be found.  Where is that?  I know the pictures are uploaded because they are marked in the corners.  But I cannot find them.

5.  To try again and test, I made a two picture album, uploaded, and this time put my address in the Share With box.  The album uploaded, I got the invitation in my email  and can link to the album through the email invitation.  But where is the album on line?  Cannot find anything and “Page cannot be displayed” is the message I get when clicking the View Online button after uploading.

6.  If I am not clear in these explanations, I can send screen captures through email or attach here if allowed.

Please HELP.  I teach a Picasa Class and I lead a Special Interest Group each month.  If this is happening to me, it may be happening to others.  They will come to me for help.   I will try to hunt for answers elsewhere also to try to find my on line albums in Picasa accounts.

Thanks for all you do.  I have tried reading all other posts relating to Google+ but have not quite found my answers.  Will try to digest them again today.

Hey Barb,

I know that Google+ is complex. I honestly don’t think Google even understands it right now because it is SO much in flux. BUT – I do love the way it displays pictures – and keeps a copy of ALL my pictures for free – and makes fun ‘Auto-Awesome’ pictures like motion, HDR, and Smile.

I think your main problem is that you’re using more than one account.  It is very important to be aware which account you’re using at any given time. Think of your account like your apartment in the Google apartment building. Things are simple if you only have one apartment, e.g. #4A. Walk into apt #4A and you see all your stuff. But if you also rent Apt #4B and you walk into that one expecting to see your stuff from #4A – you’re in for a shock because nothing is there. You must be logged in to the correct account in order to see the stuff/photos associated with that account. Errors happen when Picasa (on your computer) is logged into one account – #4A – so the pictures that are shared go to that. Then, when you open your browser, it was logged into another account. When Picasa tries to take you to the place that it just used to upload today’s pictures, you get an error message because the browser is logged in to a different account. To fix that, it’s best to simply log out (sign out) from everywhere, then re-sign in with one account.

Back to the apartment analogy – Picasa (on your computer) is like the delivery truck – sending stuff to the web. If you tell it to deliver the furniture to Apt #4A – that’s where it goes. But if you then go thru the door of Apt #4B – your stuff won’t be there. Here’s a screen shot of where to look to see what account is logged in with PIcasa, and what account is logged in with Google+

I’ll take each of your questions and answer below:

1.  How can I get out from the clutches of Google +?

You delete your Google+ “Profile”. Don’t delete the whole account! Just the Google+ Profile part. I did make a video on that pics56.Removing Google Plus to Use Picasa Web Albums, but I don’t recommend deleting your Google+ account. If you have a Google+ account, I would keep it. You can always use the PIcasaWeb interface by using this link: https://picasaweb.google.com/l…..redirect=1

2.  How can I get rid of those people I do not know?

First, check the account that is being used. I expect when you see people you don’t know, it’s because you’re logged in as someone other than yourself. Next, if it is you, are the people actually in a ‘Circle’? or are they just suggestions. If they are suggestions, just ignore them. If they are indeed in one of your circles, you can hover over their face and an X will appear where you can remove them.

3.  Willl my old albums ever be accessible?   I know they are still there because I have a few old emails with invitations and the links are still good.

Once again, I’m quite certain that, if you log on with the correct account, you will see your albums.  If not, see the official PicasaWeb Missing Photos Troubleshooter

4.  The new album with 17 collages is nowhere to be found.  Where is that?  I know the pictures are uploaded because they are marked in the corners.  But I cannot find them.

Those 17 collages must have been delivered to a different account – you may need to re-upload them using Picasa when it is logged in to the proper account.

That tells me that Picasa is logged in to a different account than you are using with your browser. See the screenshot I inserted above to see what I mean.

Let me know if this helps Barb.

Chris, you hit the nail on the head.  SmileThe Picasa SIG that I lead has a co-leader.  She seems to be the owner of the Email we share (which I never really noticed before) and that was the account I was signed in on.  I guess all those strangers are in her circle.  When I signed out from that account and signed in as me, everything was there!!!  Even the uploads I did today.

Even though I was signed in on our shared account, I have yet to fathom why the album uploaded to my account, a different email entirely.    Only glad they are still there.  Now I can toggle back and forth and see the features of Google + on one side and keep the familiar on the other.

THANK YOU  THANK YOU.    When we next meet, I owe you one (or two)

Now back to try and sharing my album and see if it all works as expected.

I’m so glad!

Hey … we’re thinking of traveling thru Texas next spring. Would your group be interested in a guest speaker?

Mrs. Geek.   I have been working on this for several days with unpredictable results.  But I think a light bulb finally came on.  I do have three accounts, one for Gary, one for me and one for the SIG that I teach.  When I open IE to use gmail, I have to sign in with one of those accounts, which ever one I need for the correspondence.  Sometimes I forget to log out.

Then down the road, I bring up Picasa and try to create a web album only to  have a problem like I originally wrote in about.  It finally dawned on me that the account that I sign in on to send out a web album has to be the same as the open account in IE which I used to access Gmail.

You did say in your reply – sign out everywhere.   I missed that EVERYWHERE and did not think about the open line to one email acount on IE and the account I was now using in Picasa.  They were different.

When I got it all together, although I had to sign in twice, once in picasa and once on IE, I was able to see all albums on that account.

However, here is a feature I do not like.  Is this normal?  When I send a web album from Picasa, the person who receives it can not only view that album, but can back up to my gallery and see all other albums created.  Is that a Google + feature?  Not that I have anything I don’t want anyone to see, but I do not recall that happening in Picasa Web Albums before Google +

They should only be able to see albums you have designated as public. You can tell which albums are public by the little globe icon below them at the right.

Let me know.
