PIcasa is no longer able to upload to Google Photos (see: Bad News about Picasa … but we were warned)
But it sounds like you start with Google Photos, then Download?? That should still work fine. You download an album from Google PHotos, that creates a .zip file that you’ll need to unzip to a folder. Then make sure Picasa is watching that folder (Tools/Folder Manager) The rest of your process should be unchanged.
Or did I misunderstand something?

Yes that is the flow that I’m following. But what I think was lost in the disconnect between Google Photos and Picasa was a method to save photo captioning/descriptions generated in Google Photos. You talk about this in the first version of your book, Chapter 11 – Downloading Albums, page 88. Item #1. I do see in the second version of your book that on page 122 you take out all mention of Picasa having capability to “save” descriptions that were generated in Google Photos.
Are you aware of any method that would capture of descriptions for processing, either within the Google tool universe or some alternative? Thanks
Ah yes – captions. Unfortunately, Google operates under a directive to never touch the original photo, including the metadata. Therefore when you type a description on a photo using Google Photos, it’s actually just entering that information in a companion database. So it shows up with the photo in Google Photos, but it doesn’t stay with the photo if it is exported anywhere.
I agree that is a rotten state of affairs – it’s so easy and wonderful to do your editing, describing, and dating, using Google Photos. Then I want to keep all that work when I download to the computer. You do get the option to download an edited version or the original – why not the edited metadata?
I will keep looking for workarounds. Meanwhile, you can use “Send Feedback” to request this feature.
