Good morning Ms. Geek,

Last summer we took a three month trip to Alaska via Canada.  I took photos with my Canon EOS 80D and Nikon Coolpix 530 cameras.  I downloaded all microSD’s to my laptop while traveling and then later also to my desktop at home and edit with Photoshop Elements. Both are Windows 10.

In the desktop I ended up with lots of duplicate copies.  The cards would say the date , time and camera media i.e. IMG_1237.JPG and duplicates added IMG_1237.1-JPG.  Duplicates would show a .1, .2 or even .3. on the duplicates.   I went through the thumb pics on the computers and deleted the duplicates at least twice.  But later they would show up again.

Is there a software program that I can use to go through the pictures on my hardrives and delete the duplicates once and for all?

I have heard about MindGems Fast Duplication recommended my Leo Laporte , tech talk on the radio for years and now on the internet , but have no experience.  I plan to test it, but was wondering if you can recommend another de-duplication PC program??  Perhaps some others may have had this duplication issue.

Thanks for your help,

Hey Barb,

I’m afraid I have no personal experience with any De-Duping software. I certainly respect Leo Laporte, so that’s as good a place to start as any. Given your situation, it should be pretty easy to tell it to only look for .jpg files and then to delete anything with a .1, .2 or .3? Actually, you should be able to do that just using Windows Files and Folders and Search.

If you still have Picasa – the Tools, Experimental, Find Duplicates still works. Here’s the article I wrote on that years ago: Finding Duplicates with Picasa.

You should probably figure out why the duplicates keep coming back though? maybe the photos on the laptop are stored in a OneDrive folder that keeps re-uploading? If so, move them to a folder outside of OneDrive – or just delete them all if they’ve successfully made it to your desktop?

This worked out well.  Once marked the duplicates and delete them all.  I had to turn my computer off and on and the next time I opened PhotoShop Elements the photos were gone.  However the next time I opened my photos many of the dups returned.  I haven’t figured why that happened.  So it wasn’t perfect but I can work with it.  Use the photos I like and leave the others.

Thanks,

Barb,

Thanks for the follow-up.

When you refer to “this worked out well” are you referring to MindGems Fast Duplication recommended by Leo Laporte? Or just using windows files and search?

Leo suggested two programs for deleting photos.  I used Easy Duplicate Finder.  It did remove a lot of the duplicate files.  But the next time I opened the media files a lot had returned.  Less than before I used the product.  But enough so I can move forward on my project to make an Ken Burns slide show of our Alaska trip.  From seeing your Google Photos tutorial about making albums I’m going to try doing a couple of albums of some shorter trips we took to Mexico and wildflowers in So. CA.  I love checking with the Geeks when I have these projects.  Thanks.

Barbara

Great.

Curious, what do you use to make the Ken Burns slideshow?
