My iphone Google photos app started crashing 2 days ago. It closed as I was uploading photos.  The next couple times I got in, it would open, but then close after it started uploading.  Then, it got to the point it was just “flashing” open and automatically closing.  I have deleted and reinstalled the app…several times…it actually works for a few seconds and uploads a few pictures each time…then, it crashes.  I googled causes and tried the steps including deleting all my videos as what I read were videos were the cause….still doing the same thing.

I have an iPhone XS fully updated running iOS 12.4.  Any ideas?

I’ve had this same action on my iPhone 7 plus.  I deleted the app and reinstalled it and all seems to be well so far.  We’ll see how it holds up.  IOS 13 coming soon.

Yes, it is a known issue – my iPhone is also crashing, but only when I try to open the assistant. Uninstall, Reinstall fixes it for a while, but then it comes back in a day or two.

One suggested solution is to delete on-device copies of photos that were edited with the web version. I don’t like that solution though. I’m just waiting for a fix.

Meanwhile, you can use the web version – even on your phone.

  1. open a browser, either Chrome or Safari
  2. go to photos.google.com and log in
  3. Everything should work fine there, including manually uploading photos with the up arrow icon in the upper right.

Here is the Google help thread that I am following to see when we get a fix. Go ahead and add your experience to this thread.

Any idea how long it usually takes for Google to fix problems like this? It looks like the original problem was listed in April…quite a few replies in Aug so it appears to have gotten worse.

I’ve seen these types of issues get resolved within the hour and I’ve seen them take a year! We’re not getting much communication on this from the Google Photos team. I know the issue has been escalated.

Did you try uploading photos by opening a browser like Chrome or Safari, go to photos.google.com and then click the upload button / phone?

I looked at it, but was worried I would trash up my google photos by not remembering what I had uploaded.  I just tested it and it does not look like it will duplicate if I accidentally upload this way twice.  This workaround should work fine.  Thanks.

Good news! The latest update to Google Photos iOS version looks like it fixes the crashing issue – version 4.23. Check it out. go to App Store and tap on UPdates. If you see an update for Google Photos – do it.

Great.  I’ll go try it now.  I did manage to duplicate some photos :).
