I am putting lots of photos shot I want to over the last 10 yrs and they are from different sources.  How do I get that bucket of folders in order by their exif (or meta data) date?  The output of this will go into a book of the first 11 yrs of grandsons life so I need to beable to move along in date order.

Jim,”

All photos you upload to Google Photos should be automatically in order by date taken. The Date Taken is assinged by the camera that took the photo. So, whatever camera your photos came from – they all have a date taken and Google Photos will place them in date order.  A problem comes when the photos did not come from a camera – they were attachments to emails, or pictures from facebook, or scanned photos. In some of those cases they have no “date taken”.

Here is a video about how to add/change the date taken using Windows: 607.GP-Change Photo Dates

You also mention a “Bucket of folders” – that indicates to me that your photos are on your computer, and you want them uploaded to Google Photos. You can do that manually, folder by folder. See this video: 710.GP-Folders to Albums OR you can have Google Drive for Desktop do it for you automatically: see this video  705.GP-Upload to Google Photos using Google Drive for Desktop

I recommend the manual, folder by folder, method. But, if you have hundreds of folders, you need to use the automatic method with Google Drive for Desktop.

Hope that helps.

Hi Criss

Thanks for that information.  Getting my head around this is interesting.  If I was to use google photos to go to chronological order I can see some issues.  First I am building a photo book for one of my graduating grandsons.  So what I want to end up with is strictly the photos of him.  So I think I need to create a separate goggle account so that the 12 years worth of photos will not be interspersed with all my other photos.  So I assume I create a new gmail account with another name.  Then from a clean machine I would transfer all the photos into that computer and link that to the new google account.  I would there by be able to get that sequence of just the photos of him that I want.

Do you see anything wrong with that approach?  Are their pitfalls in the creation of the new google account? The existance of all the other pictures creates a big problem.  Now I suppose that I could get the face recognition to sort them back out.  Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.  As you might guess I am dealing with over a thousand photos initially till I cull them down.

Oh no – don’t create another Google Account. That gets to be a big mess soon.

There are 2 ways to segregate the photos of your grandson

  1.  automatically – Google uses artificial intelligence to notice all photos with a person’s face and it puts them all together in the People and Pets section
  2.  Manually creating albums. If all the photos of your grandson are in particular folders on your computer, you can upload them to Google photos and put them in an album for him. In an album, the photos are automatically sorted by date taken with the earliest ones on top. Chronological order.
  3.  Both: let Google do its face recognition thing, then use the command to “Share as album.” That way you’re in control. You can remove some photos from the album, you can also add photos that Google missed.

Hope that helps
