As painful as it was, I’ve migrated all my desktop & Picasa photos to GP.

My biggest problem at the moment is misidentification of two people. Person M has the feature photo of person A. I was able to correct the feature photo using the 3-dot menu option. Of course that did nothing for the fact that both A & M appear when I search for M under People & Pets. Mercifully only person A appears when I query for A. Also mercifully, these individuals are from different social circles & never appear together in photos or albums. (It’s not a total screw-up as they do have similar facial features.)

I’m not sure if Picasa had this confusion, but at least it offered multiple images on a screen to vote up or down. When GP asks for verification, corrections are one photo at a time. It could be painful.

A related problem is tagging someone who has not been tagged. I’d like to add someone for facial recognition but I cannot find means for initiating a search.

How do I fix these two problems?

We mere mortals have very little control over the facial recognition process in Google Photos. As you have discovered, you can remove a face from a group where it does not belong, but you cannot tag a single face to be added to a group – Google does it automatically or not at all. The only thing I’ve found to help is to add more photos of that person to prompt Google to re-evaluate.

You can merge 2 groups. For example, I see two separate face groups that are actually the same person:

  1. use the “who is this” link to give the first group a person’s name – “Jim”
  2. click on the second face group and start typing Jim and it will ask you – do you want to combine this group with the first “Jim”
  3. click yes

The only way to manually group faces together is to make your own album. You can start with a person album that Google made, select all the photos and then add to new album, give the album the person’s name. From then on, you can add whatever photos you want to that album. But, it won’t be part of the people and pets section.
