I’ve heard of some scanners that can scan directly to a USB drive.
Most scanners I know are meant to be connected to a computer.
If your external drive is also connected, the software that does the scanning will allow you to select a target folder for the scanned files.
The files will not be stored on the computer’s local internal drive.
You should have a reliable backup copy of all important files.
