Actually, you lose a little quality or image size with the Gift CD. But, rarely enough to worry about.
The difference is this:
With Backup: Picasa backs up your original .jpg file plus any edits you made using Picasa. When you restore to another computer, you will be able to use Picasa and UNDO to get back to your original. This means that all your original size and resolution pictures are available.
With Gift CD: This does an export of your edited pictures, creating a brand new .jpg file with all the edits applied. So, when you view the .jpg files on disk, you will see the edited version of your picture, including any reduction is size/resolution that you specify. But, there is no original to go back to. So, if you cropped a person out of the picture, you have no way to get that person back. The picture on the CD is the cropped version – period.
