Q: I’m messing around creating My Maps, and some places we went to 3years ago are yellow starred?!
Like, a restaurant, some campgrounds, a friend’s address. Spooky.
What gives?

A: Yellow stars are “Saved Places” They are very easy to create, you just click on a place on the map when you’re logged in and then click Save.

Here’s a video of how they were created in the past:
Those gold stars should only show up when you’re viewing Maps.Google.com though – not with MyMaps. Are you maybe viewing My Maps from the main maps app? Using My Places?
If so, you can turn off the gold stars with
  1. 3-line menu, Your places
  2. Saved tab
  3. Starred Places – 3-dot menu – Hide on your map

Let me know.
