Hi Geeks,
I have created a map of my road trip in Google Maps, but the placemarks disappear once I exit Google Maps. You can see from “The Route” page in my blog, http://www.RoadTripRamble, that the placemarks once existed, but if you click through to Google Maps, the placemarks are not there.
I have edited the placemarks dozens of times and added the icons again and again to no avail. I'm not trying to use a custom icon, just the blue one that everyone uses.
I understand that you are now using Streets and Trips for your blog. Would this be a better solution? I would prefer having an interactive map in “The Route,” but have not figured out how to do that.
Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Sarah
I haven't been using Google Maps much lately, but I still do like it a lot – no reason to switch. I just checked and although the screen has changed a bit, the concepts are still the same as in our 'Custom Maps' Show-Me Video. You need to be in 'My Places' and 'Create Map' to get to where you add the markers. Then you give the map a name. When you're done, be sure to save. When you return to Google Maps and click on 'My Places' you should see the map name you saved before – click on that and you should see your marker.
Let me know if that helps.
Sarah,
I just helped someone else with a similar issue, and I wonder if your problems have the same cause.
Did you start your map by using 'Get Directions'?? Then save the map, then go back and edit it?
Get Directions should only be used to get one set of directions. If you want to save those directions for later use, you can do that with the Save button. But if you want to create a custom map that shows your route all around the country – it's much better to Create a custom map from scratch, add the place marks, and draw the route lines.
