Q: Is there a way to have Google maps give verbal turn directions while running in the background, like it used to do?
A: I’m not sure what is causing your issue, but here is something to check if you’re using an Android device:
- Settings, Apps – tap on Google Maps
- Tap on Battery
- Tap on Allow background activity, then Remove restriction
Let us know if that works for you.
On iOS devices the background setting
- main settings screen
- Scroll down to the apps section and find Google Maps, tap on it
- Make sure that background app refresh is on

Q: Yes, I checked that. Does your iPad give you directions with Google Maps running in the background? I used to be able to surf Safari while the maps still gave audio directions.
A: I wasn’t sure but I tested while driving and navigating one day and my iPad would still give voice turn directions even if I was reading my email on it and maps was in the background. The system setting for background made no difference. With it on or with it off, she would still speak in the background.
