Q: My granddaughter had posted a couple of pictures on her Facebook page. I right clicked, copied and then opened my PEOPLE folder in My Pictures, clicked on paste and thought I had it. Now, when I try to open it with any picture prg. I get the msg. that the file ext. is not recognized. The icon looks like a film strip with a musical note on it. I have tried to rename the file with a jpg extension to no avail. Can you tell me, what I can do to open the pictures, please?
A: Well, copy and paste is not the right way to get pictures from Facebook – or anyplace on the Internet – to your computer. I don’t even know how you did that at all. If I right-click on an image in Facebook and copy image – then go to Picasa, or a folder on my computer – right-click and paste isn’t even available.
Anyway – what you need to do is this:
- In Facebook – open the picture you want so that it is full screen, you should see some links below the picture on the right side: (Tag Photo, Options, Share, Like)
- Click on Options, and choose Download
- Navigate to an appropriate folder in your My Pictures area (no need to put it in a People folder – Picasa will find faces later) I would put it in my folder of pictures for the current month. You may want to make a folder underneath My Pictures for Facebook Pictures. When you find a good folder, click Save
- That picture from Facebook is now on your computer and it will show up when you open Picasa.

Hi,
I’m using a Mac and running Picasa. When I follow the instructions to download a picture from Facebook I get a small bar at the bottom of the screen, but don’t get an option to place the picture where I want, and nothing about Picasa. Options are Open, Always open files of this type and Show in Finder. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks ,
Fred Wishnie
Hi Fred,
Ah yes … many browsers are set to save downloaded files to a pre-determined folder … usually a ‘Downloads’ folder. So, you need to find it there using Finder – then move it (Cut and Paste) to somewhere in your pictures folder.
Does it ‘open file and show in finder’? If so, you’ve found it! Just cut it from there – navigate to your pictures folder and paste it.
Hope that helps
