I am on a MacBook and have been downloading from Google Photos to my hard drive and then uploading in to Facebook. Some of the photos are showing up the correct size when viewed on both our MacBook and MacBook Air and some are showing up smaller than they should. All the photos have been taken by the same iphone and sync’ed to Google photos. They all have been downloaded and uploaded the same way. The photos appear the same size when viewed on the iphone Facebook app. Any idea what could be happening? I am attaching the one that is showing up too small. I notice that the file sizes are different, but not sure what caused them to change. Both view the same size in Google Photos.
hmmm, I don’t really know what’s happening. Any possibility that the small photos were cropped? That definitely makes files smaller. Or, have they been up/downloaded many times?
I think the best way to get photos to Facebook is directly from the phone. Open photo, tap the share button, choose Facebook.
The photo you attached is awfully tiny. Are you sure you’re downloading from Google Photos? That’s with the 3-dot menu and Download. The tiny file almost looks like a screenshot – when you right-click on a photo and copy or save.
Let me know.

Not cropped and downloaded using the 3 dots. I have been loading from my phone given this problem and have had no problems with that. I have not figured it out yet, but I think there is something Facebook did in the upload process as we looked as we compared file sizes of the file downloaded from Google photos on the Mac hard drive (and uploaded) vs the photo downloaded from Facebook and it was a different size.
I did a test with Facebook and was appalled at how much Facebook shrunk my photo. From 9.1MP 4032 × 2268 2.3 MB in Google Photos to 5MP 960 X 540 153 KB So, I continued some research and found this article that discussed how Facebook requires certain proportions – if you adhere to them, it will help, but Facebook always degrades your photos.
It sure sounds like Facebook is the culprit here.

Thanks for your testing and research on this. Very interesting results!
I also wanted to thank you for the presentation at Escapade and all the learning materials. I have updated Google Maps with our travels from 2014 and love having this history. My husband has become a blogger for our journeys which I think is going to be very interesting to review in the future (and helpful for our failing memories!!!)
