My wife needs a new computer. Her current one is about to crash. She has Win 7. I read somewhere that transferring data to a Win 8.1 system has become much harder. Something about you have to create a file on a DVD.
What will we have to do to transfer her data from the Win 7 to Win 8.1? Can we use Bluetooth or will we have to have a crossover cable?
Also, do you know if Win 8.1 is eligible for a free upgrade to Win 10 when it comes out?
Thanks
George Harper
It is true that backup and restore has changed. It is actually better with Win8.1, but not easily compatible with Win7.
The last time I did a transfer like that, I used an external hard drive. Put all the important data there and just plugged it into the new computer and used the files from there.
I now use Win8 file history to keep everything backed up to recover recently deleted files. It is a good idea to make a regular disk image for catastrophic failures.
Bluetooth would take a long time with a lot of files. A crossover cable may work. Check into LapLink. They say it will transfer more than just data. Sometimes it works great, other times there will be substantial cleanup.
