Question about Dropbox App on Surface Pro 2 and Windows 8.1

Jim and Chris, we just purchased the Windows Surface Pro 2 computer today, which uses Win 8.1 OS.

After installing Dropbox App, discovered that all files are “READ ONLY” and cannot be modified/saved. This includes simple .txt files.

Google searches reveal this as a MAJOR complaint. The Surface Pro 2 App only accesses the Dropbox folder in the “cloud” server, just like our Android phones, but at least our Samsung Galaxy 3 phones allow us to update/modify Dropbox files as if we were on a Laptop.

There are no physical files on the Pro 2. Our Win 7 Laptop and Win 7 tablet contain a physical folder ..\Dropbox that syncs with the server across all our devices.

Question: Do you know of a solution that allows modifying existing Dropbox files using the Surface Pro 2 computer? If not, we are taking it back for a refund.

I encountered the same issue when I installed the app after upgrading to 8.1 on my Surface Pro. No need to take it back.

Here is what I did. First, I uninstalled the app I got from from the Microsoft Store. Then I went to Dropbox.com and installed the program from the website, just like on Windows 7, and it works as I expected. Problem solved.

I do expect Dropbox will fix this, at least I hope so.

I don’t know if this will work on the Surface running RT, which is a tablet that runs apps, not “true” Windows programs.

I am really happy with my Surface Pro and don’t feel the need to upgrade to the new Surface Pro 2, yet.
