I want to create an email address to act as a listserv. That is, I want an address that anyone can mail to that will send mail to everyone who is a member of the list. Someone suggested to me that it can be done with google group but I’m not seeing how. I’m looking for something that one person administers for the group w/wo the ability self-subscribe/unsubscribe.

I never actually set up a Listserv so I don’t know. A Google search for listserv brought me to L-Soft, so it is still around – but the lowest price mentioned is $2,500! I doubt that’s what you’re looking for.
Did you know that a facebook group can use an email address? An email sent to that address appears as a post in the group, and everyone in the group is notified. We demonstrate facebook groups in a guest appearance on a YouTube show here. Of course, everyone in the group needs to use Facebook.
I haven’t used Google Groups in years, but it looks like it’s still there, and, yes, that might do what you want. Here is the official help screens for Google Groups
If you’re looking into this for a real group of people, like a club, you might want to look into something like GroupSpaces.com. I know a few clubs that use it for managing membership, scheduling events, emailing to the group, and having a website for the group.
Hope that helps
