Here is more information from a friend and reader, Gary K.

Thanks for your newsletter, which I always read through.
I have the Virgin Mobile cell modem, which I used last Winter in Florida.  I also started using it again, when they announced the $40 unlimited time plan.  Two additional points of interest.  There is a “time-out” for unattended use, which will log you off for a certain period of inactivity.  You can't stay connected all the time.  This limits it for use by some devices. Secondly, there is an initial cost for the hardware.  I paid $100 for the harware last year in Merritt Island, Florida, using it from Key West to Jacksonville, and on the drive north, without any problems. This September, a tenant bought one from Radio Shack in Manahawkin, NJ for $79.

This via email from another reader – negative reviews of Virgin Mobile MiFi

Only 3G in our hometown is Sprint so I was close to finalizing deal on EVO/unlimited data when I saw your article on Virgin Mobile. It sounded like the solution to our access problems since we knew we were going to be stuck with Sprint Network.
It is apparently so popular that finding the 2200 mifi device is a bit of a trick but it did show as available at the local Radio Shack.
Problem is that when I got there, they said that the only one's they had were actually in stock but not available for sale because they were all going back due to complaints of slow connectivity/speed.
Sounds like the article below explains what we are seeing in Quincy, that the Virgin Mobile solution is showing about only 1/4 of speed of Sprint 3g in same place.…..w/3368/64/
