I have an iphone 4s, and am very interested in tethering it with a Samsung Netbook. This is all new to me, so please excuse the questions. I am not sure the difference between PDANet or FOXFi, for my situation. Also, I am not clear on this: Do you download this software to your computer, or your iphone? Any further info would be appreciated. I hope the problem with the above mentioned video will be resolved…I think it would help me make some sense of this. I’m pretty lost here!

RE the video … are you able to watch other videos OK? All you need is a Flash player and you can get that at: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer
PDANet, from http://www.junefabrics.com allows you to tether your phone to the computer with a cable. See this video on that.
FoxFi (www.foxfi.com) allows you to turn your phone into a hotspot, then any device that can connect to a WiFi hotspot can connect to it.
PDAnet needs to be installed on phone and computer. FoxFi is just on the phone.

Yes…I am able to watch other videos, and I do have “Flash Player”. Last night, for some reason, I was not able to watch the video. Today is a different story. I was able to watch the video…no problems!
I neglected to add that my iphone 4s provider is AT &T. Does this present a problem with tethering?…or is it just the Droid with Verizon that can do this?
Is it really that simple to use PDANet? Go to junefabrics.com, download this software on the phone and my netbook, connect the USB cable and that’s it?
Below is what’s on the junefabrics website: Not sure I understand? Jaibreak sounds like something I don’t think I want to do or should do? Also what is Cydia? Let me see if I have part of this correct:
1. If I just want to use my 4G signal from my iphone to tether to my netbook, I don’t need to install anything on my netbook, but I do need to download PDANet on my iphone. Am I on the right track? And then go through settings to establish a connection?
2. Or, if I want to use WiFi mode, I do not need anything installed on the computer end.
3. To connect via USB cable, I still have to download PDANet on my iphone, and download the “desk client ” on my netbook.
Sorry to ask so many questions, but this is about as clear as mud to me right now…guess that’s one reason I wanted to become a member. Thanks in advance for clearing all this up for me, and maybe others.

How to Install – version 5.30
Apple has not accepted PdaNet into the App Store since it avoids your carrier’s tether plan. You will need to jailbreak your iPhone (see instructions) and install it through Cydia. To use WiFi mode you do not need anything installed on the computer end. To use USB mode, download the desktop client on Mac or Windows. |

Oh … I didn’t catch that you had an iPhone. Sorry, but, unless you’re willing to jailbreak your phone – PDANet and FoxFi are unavailable to you. Lots of people jailbreak their iPhones – it means to break the constraints that Apple places on using anything not Apple. It’s not illegal, and it’s not really difficult, but it does void your warranty and you probably don’t want to do it.
It’s very easy to make your iPhone be a WiFi hotspot … Apple calls it a personal hotspot and you should find it right in your settings. BUT, you’ll be paying AT&T monthly for using that feature-I think $20.
The FCC recently ruled that Verizon could not prevent users from using tethering apps like FoxFi. I was hoping this would mean that iPhone users could use FoxFi … but it doesn’t seem to be working out that way.
