I hope you can figure this one out, Chris? I use ibooks, not so much for purchased books, but for a lot of other things, mainly User Manuals of items I own. I just think it’s more convenient to look them up on my iPhone or iPad. Well, I just recently discovered that all of my pdf’s, everything is gone!! I do use iCloud for back up on both devices. Photos of course are backed up with Google. Of course I immediately Googled this problem to find out that they think it was from a recent software update. I’ve patiently gone through several suggested steps to fix this, but nothing has brought any of this information back! Needless to say I am sick about it! Do you have any suggestions? Please help!Cry As always…Thanks in advance!!

Geez, I really don’t know. After reading your message, I checked my iBooks and even though I haven’t visited it in years? I still see several .pdf ‘books’ and other downloaded/purchased books. They are still there even though I’ve been thru several updates. Is it possible that the account got changed?

  • with the “Read Now” tab at the bottom active
  • Tap the circle in upper right – the account button and check if that is you
  • if not, you can scroll down to sign out, then sign in with the correct account

If that’s not it, one more thing I’ve seen is some books may have been hidden.

  • After tapping the account button
  • in the middle of the options, “Manage hidden purchases”

What else have you tried?

You say that these were on your iPad. Have you also checked the iBooks app on your iPhone?

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately after trying all of your suggestions, no luck! I can’t tell you all the things I’ve tried…many…all from Apple support. Over the past couple of days it looks like I have recovered, for whatever reason,  about half of what I had in “Books”, which was 100+! BTW iphone & iPad both have this issue.
Shouldn’t I be able to recover this from the cloud? I’ve read posts that say they’ve done nothing to remedy this and all of a sudden everything they lost in “Books” just reappeared! It’s crazy…to say the least! If you come up with anything else, please let me know. Thanks again!

It sounds like you’ve tried everything I could think of.

I would like to know if you have the iCloud Drive syncing turned on …

  • Open your main system settings
  • Scroll down, and down … till you see the Books app and tap it
  • Scroll down just a littel to “Syncing”
  • Is iCloud Drive turned ON?

Yes…iCloud Drive is turned on! Can you recommend a different place for me to keep my pdf’s from now on that would be more reliable? Thanks again!

I like Google Drive or Dropbox. Dropbox is great because it is not part of any ecosystem, it is independent and I think that makes it more understandable. It is a separate website – Dropbox.com and it has an app for iOS.

Thanks Chris! “Books” is a weak sister! I have both apps that you mentioned…so I guess I will go with one of those. I still wish there was a way to retrieve the pdf’s I lost. What good is iCloud if you can’t restore lost stuff? Thanks for your help!
