I do not want to subscribe to Google storage. I keep getting a message from google that I am out of storage so need to delete something or buy storage. The culprit seems to be my photos. I thought storing photos in the cloud was free as long as I had my setting correct. Please help me figure out why my photo storage is causing a problem. Thank you.

Melissa or Bruce,

You’re correct that, if you choose “High Quality” for your photos, you get unlimited photo/video storage for free. You need to know that your Google storage is also used by Gmail and Google Drive. To see the stats of what is using your storage, go to https://one.google.com/storage

If you see that Google Photos is the culprit, then you can go to https://photos.google.com/settings and click “Recover Storage” – this will convert past photos/videos that were uploaded in Original size to High Quality.

Thank you!  The ‘recover’ solved the problem. My guess is that before I learned about ‘high quality’ storage, my photos were saved as ‘original’ without me realizing it. Now they are all ‘high quality’ and my drive storage is basically empty. All good!
