I’m thinking I want to try Google Drive for Desktop, but not sure if it is going to meet the specific need I have.   I watched your video on this topic, which was very informative, but unless I missed it, it didn’t answer some questions I have.

1.  Can I choose which documents I want to put on GDfD or do I have to have all my docs on it?   I really only want to choose certain docs to upload.

2.  If I accidentally delete a doc on my computer, or if my computer crashes and I lose my docs, will they still be on Google Drive, providing I have uploaded them?     My computer recently crashed 3 times, and each time the repair person was able to extract my data, “fix” the computer, and then add the data back.   However, I found that in the process, many documents were lost or corrupted.  Would I have been able to recover them on Google Drive?

Thanks for your help.

Marcia, see my responses below your questions:

1.  Can I choose which documents I want to put on GDfD or do I have to have all my docs on it?   I really only want to choose certain docs to upload.

There are 2 separate processes here

  1. syncing files from online Google Drive down to your computer. with this process you cannot choose individual folders or files, it’s all or nothing (you’re not the only one who dislikes this!) If you choose the “Stream” option, you will get all the folder and file names, then you can select individual folders to be available offline
  2. syncing folders on your computer UP to the online Google Drive. In this process you can specify individual folders to get synced UP to Google Drive. I don’t think this is what you mean. I think you created Google Docs, Sheets, etc. and they live in Google Drive online – you want some of them on your computer. But since you said UPload – I’m not sure.

Accidentally delete a doc on computer – that deletion will be synced thru to Google Drive online. If you realize your mistake within 30 days, you will find the deleted file in the Trash and you can recover it.

Crashed computer – crashing is different, no “Delete this file” command was ever issued, therefore the deletion is not synced to Drive online.

Google Drive for Desktop is pretty complicated … there’s more info in this article, and we did one of our hour long YouTube shows on it also – see Episode 220.

Hope that helps

Chris
