When you first described Evernote, I jumped right in and “scanned” several items as documents (drivers license, insurance cards, etc.).  Just a few days ago there was an upgrade (or update) offered.  I went for it, but ever since that time the “document scanner” no longer works on my Android phone.   (Samsung Galaxy 5S)  The picture save as a document shows up as a black square.  I searched Evernote Support, and there are so many issues that I can’t find anything close to what I am dealing with.  So…….I will just use the “photo” part of the camera save – not quite as nice as the previous “document” save, but I guess eventually they will fix this.  This is just FYI.

Oh No! The document scanning is one of the best features of Evernote. It still works fine on my Galaxy S5. In fact, I demonstrated it in our show yesterday – did you watch that?

Are you saying that your previous scans are not showing correctly now? Or that you can’t scan a new document? or both …

My previous scans are showing correctly.  When I select “camera” the little icon on the top with the person is grayed out, so I can’t get to a document scan any longer.  I am using the free version of Evernote, but it was working up until I updated the program.  My phone is Android Galaxy S5 Marshmallow. 6.0.1.  I wonder if the free version allows certain functions for a certain time period, and then these functions silently go away with the hope that the customer will upgrade to a paid version.

Evernote does change their features to premium sometimes, but I think that the document camera is still part of the free.

Here’s the list of their features by plan: https://evernote.com/pricing/

It does show “scan and digitize business cards” as a premium version, but that’s a bit different. I just checked on Jim’s phone (he has the free version) and his camera shows the document icon. Have you tried rebooting the phone – sometimes it fixes weird things.

I’ll come back here if I find out anything else.

Rebooting phone didn’t work.  So I uninstalled the app, then went to Play Store and installed it again.  Now the scanner feature works.

Once again, thanks for your help.  You always give me clues to take me in the right direction.  Cool

Well, I really jumped into Evernote by putting all kinds of things on there – documents like Drivers licenses, health care power of attorney, medical info summaries, prescriptions, membership cards, vehicle registration and insurance, even pictures of the license plates on the vehicles, and the cat’s microchip info.  So now I’m wondering how secure this is.  I’ve put a password (number) on the app, but as far as getting hacked the ways things are today, I have concerns.  This would be so handy in case of emergency when you know the phone will go with you no matter what else is happening.

By the way, as for the issues mentioned previously for the free version, the option to save as document appears after the picture is taken – so that must have been in the upgrade.  And if for any reason it does not work correctly, then uninstalling and reinstalling seems to take care of it.

It’s as secure as any online storage system using a username and password. You can make it more secure by setting up “2 step verification” That means you will need username and password … then it sends a code to your phone (different every time) and you need to enter that code before you can get in.

Here’s the Evernote help article on How to set up 2 Step verification
