Hi Again Chris,

Drop box has worked very well,  too well.  My box is full and it has lots of pictures which I also have in google or on my phone.  Is there and easy way to eliminate groups of pictures, etc. without having to go item by item and deleting so I can free up space on dropbox.  I really don’t need to buy more space, just get rid of a lot of things that are backed up in other places.

Thanks,

Gordon

If you have Dropbox set up like I do, then you have a dropbox folder on your computer. When you delete a file there, it synchronizes that deletion to your online Dropbox account. So – do delete multiple files, you just use standard file management techniques. You can delete entire folders, you can click on one file – shift/Click on another one 20 files away and all 21 will be selected – then delete.

etc.

I have wondered that also, thank you.  Also, my gmail account is full because google + for some reason keeps backing up the same photos from time to time.  I have decided to open a dropbox account and have just gotten started.

I am thinking about turning off the google+ backup so that I can free up space for documents I like to keep on my google drive.  Is there any reason why I shouldn’t?  Dropbox automatically saves photos from my devices, correct?

Also, just recently Picasa re-saved three new sets of my Google + backup saved photos for some reason.  I have not changed any settings, so not sure why it would resave 3,000 of the same photos.  I do see in Folder Manager, that I can click on the Google back up folder and “Remove from Picasa”.  I am assuming since PIcasa does not keep your photos that they will remain on my computer, and in Google+photos?.  Do you know why it would all of a sudden re-upload photos?

Thank you!

Lauri – you have several things going on here, let me see if I can break it down:
1. Using Google+ vs. using Dropbox: First of all – Google+ photos is discontinued and straight Google Photos has taken its place. If you are truly using the old Google+ backup option, you should download the latest. See this video: 395. Google Photos Autobackup: How to Install on Windows

Then watch all the other Google Photos videos that apply to you: https://geeksontour.com/google-…..al-videos/ I think you’ll like it.

Dropbox is a great way to get pictures from your smartphone to your computer, but now that I am using Google Photos for ALL my pictures, I find I don’t need dropbox anymore. If you do use dropbox, I recommend using it for transfer only – see this video: Cloud Computing: Dropbox and Synchronizing #325

2. Freeing up space from Google+ (or google photos) for use by Google Drive: The only way that Google+ or Google Photos is taking up space is if you set the resolution to “Original” We recommend using the “High Quality” setting in the Google Photos Backup – then you have unlimited storage for free.

3. Why did Picasa reUpload 3,000 pictures, and can I get rid of the Google+ Backup folder? It shouldn’t re-Upload pictures – are you sure it wasn’t just scanning them again to see if there was something new to backup? Have you looked online and do you see duplicates and triplicates? As for the Google+ Backup Folder – that’s on your computer – it was an extra option in the backup settings – to make an additional copy on your computer. I think you can delete it … or move it off to an External Hard Drive for safekeeping. Do this using Window Explorer tools. Just ‘remove from Picasa’ won’t do it – that just removes it from Picasa’s view, not from your computer.

Old articles about Google+ to read and see if it explains what is going on with your computer: Google+ Auto-BackupPicasa Tip: Why I don’t use Google+ AutoBackup on my Phone, just on my Computer

But – you really need to start using Google Photos. Yes, I know it’s confusing. Google kind of changed their mind midstream on how to handle their photo backup system. I do think they got it right this time though.

Hello Chris,  I did all that you suggested, thank you!  Then I spent this last week watching more videos, and reading information on our website………..all good info except I am confused again only with different issues!  J

  1. I learned how to use Dropbox for transferring of Photos from phone to my Master Library. Then to my file folders.  I do have a regular back up system there, so essentially all are safe.  Plus, I like working with photos on my computer with my big screen.Laugh  I think two systems are good, so I did do the Google Photos Autobackup and so they are in two places.  Yes, I can access photos to show others with the Google Photos app on my phone.  I have a couple of issues with that and wondered if you could help.

For those photos that you take and have no intention of keeping (i.e. pic of item in a store to send someone, or bad pics), you have to go in and delete them in two places…………the dropbox camera uploads when you are cleaning and organizing………and Google photos.  I thought perhaps if I turned off the Google auto app on my phone, that would fix it as they are going to Dropbox anyway….but I see on the app on my phone they are there…just waiting to upload.  I don’t want to see them in google photos period.  Is there a way to fix that?  I like organizing my photos and don’t mind getting rid of unwanted ones, but don’t really want to do that twice.

I did read your 10/31/15 article on just putting everything on google photos and then downloading the ones you want to your computer.  I don’t want to do that as they do not transfer at the original size.  The “high quality” as you suggested for the unlimited free back up is great for back up, but not my originals on my computer.

I know I must be missing something easy here, but cant figure it out.

I did take care of #2 and #3 problems.  Thank you!
