What is the best software for creating PDF files?  I’m not in business so I don’t need Adobe Acrobat Pro or something with a monthly online charge.  But I also don’t want to use MS Word and convert from there, if possible.

Not sure why you don’t want to convert from Word. That’s the way I do it. because I’m usually creating the document in word, then I just use the menu: File->Export->Create PDF to make the .pdf version of the file.

All the office programs have that menu option (Excel, Powerpoint)

Other web-based converters include http://www.cutepdf.com/

You also can just try to print your document, then instead of selecting a printer, choose “Save as PDF”

Let us know if any of this helps.
