This change has created a real problem for me. I have been on the phone with Google Chromecast help twice now and they are no help. I cannot put photos from Google Photos of my choice into the Chromecast slideshows any more. The options in ambient mode are photo frame , art gallery and experimental. They tell me to use photo frame, but it is no help. I would like to have the choices of my Google Photos that I had before using edit backdrop. The picture choice they offer now is absurd! They are not even recent!
Any hope?
We’re on the road and haven’t even turned on the TV in the RV yet, so we haven’t used Chromecast in a while. I expect you have found this help page: Ambient mode for Chromecast. And, it does indicate that choosing Photo Frame Channel, then you should be able to select Google Photos albums to be displayed.
If we get a chance to check it out on the RV’s TV, I’ll get back to you.

I am still having this problem and am in touch with Google regularly. Been working with them on this from 7/19 to today 8/8 with no hope in site. I did get a feedback from their Engineering Team to include the keyword “GHT3 Ambient Mode photo issues” in my feedback. I was dealing with “a Senior Technical Support Expert for Chromecast Support” and have not made a bit of progress.
As I see it all they have to do is go back to “edit backdrop” in Google Home. Once they changed it to Ambient Mode it has been worthless. When you go into Photo Frame in the Ambient Mode it says it gives you “your favorite albums from Google Photos” to select from, but then does not offer them as it did in “edit backdrop”. It is difficult to describe the photos they offer and what to do with them, and they really can’t describe it.
When I spoke to the Google Help team today they tell me they are aware of the issue, but do not have a solution yet. They promise to keep me informed.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Hey Tom,
I’m afraid I don’t actually remember the Backdrop mode as being so different. Back then, we would open Google Home, choose some albums of photos to be displayed on Chromecast and be done. Now, we still open Google Home, choose some albums to be displayed and we’re done.
I will confirm that, on my Google Home, I am only offered 103 (I counted!) albums to choose from and I have thousands. The top ones are mostly current, but some oddballs are thrown in. I notice that the very first album is Favorites. So – a workaround for your situation would be to put all the photos you want to see on your Chromecast into the Favorites album. If you haven’t started using Favorites yet, here’s the video:
