Jim,
This has probably been addressed before but I couldn’t find it. Google Chrome always puts their bulls-eye, or whatever it is, on the desktop when adding a website or program shortcut. Is there any way to use the real icon (favicon?) for the website? I am fairly sure that IE will use the website icon. Maybe I could change the browser to IE, install the favicon, then change back to Chrome. Maybe??? My desktop looks like a real mess and all the shortcuts are the same. Thanks. P.S. I really appreciate Geeks on Tour!
Frank
Hey Frank,
To change the icon on a desktop shortcut:
- Right-click on the shortcut and choose Properties
- On the “Web Document” tab you’ll see a button to change icon
- You can pick any of the system icons
- If you want a custom icon, it needs to be an .ico file – not a jpg. But if you have a .jpg you can use this website to convert it to .ico then re-download
- Click OK – the shortcut should look like the icon you selected.
Let me know how it goes.

There are zillions of icons that I can use but what I wanting to do is get the icon that goes with the program/website. My desktop icon for Google Photos is the Google bullseye, same with some Roadtrippers and a couple others. The “real” logo used to be there when the program was installed but now it’s the Google thing. It’s not a realy biggy but just would be nice to have them back.
Hey Frank,
Well – I had a .jpg of the Google photos icon and I used the website (that I forgot to link to in my message above: https://convertico.com/) to convert it to a .ico file.
You should be able to get it with this link to my file.
Let me know
You mention programs as well as websites. An easy way to get a program icon is to create the shortcut by right-clicking on a file or program, then “Send to … Desktop” For example, if you have an Excel file that you want a shortcut for – start by going to your file system, right-click on the Excel file and send to desktop. It will have an Excel icon on your desktop.
For websites, you need access to the logo file somewhere … how did you get the Geeks on Tour icon to work?
