Since I’m a Pixel 4 user I would have thought I would get the new updated Google Photo app early.  I watched yesterday’s Button Show and have an updated app, but still the features you mentioned are not there.  I hope they plan to get everyone’s app updated so that I can follow along on Sunday Show.

Luverne,

All I can say is, you’re not the only one. Jim also has a Pixel and has yet to see the new Google Photos app – although the icon has changed. I have the new one on my iPhone but still not yet on my Samsung.

Word I heard was that everyone should have it by Monday – today. I guess that means they have until midnight?!

Yes, I also have the new logo, so hopefully we’ll get the rest of it soon.  I love this new feature also,  I’m hoping if I update some of my older photos to a gps or named location the app will pick it up on the map.  Thanks,

LuVerne

Yes, you can manually add location information to a photo and it will be picked up for the map. Unfortunately, the web version on computer is the only place where you can set location.

I probably know the answer, but just in case you know a trick I’ll ask anyway.  I have been adding the locations to a lot of my pictures, but there a loads of older pictures that do not show a location option.  Is there a way I can add location to my older photos?

Not sure I understand – an older photo would be no different from a new photo to Google Photos. Any photo in Google Photos can have its location changed using the web version.  Are you maybe asking if you can select a bunch of photos to add location to at once? If so, yes, just select them all, click the 3-dot menu and choose Edit location. You can only use named locations, not gps.

Problem – just like dates, this info only works within Google Photos. If you download or transfer these photos to some other program, the location won’t be there.

I scanned a lot of photos into my picture folder before Google Photos was in existence.  I’m attaching one photo as it appears in Google photos on the webpage.  I can put in the notes where we were, but nowhere to locate it so it will appear on the map that I can see.  I just tried to upload it and it says it exceeds the maximum size.  I’ll go to the photos and share it.  I think you can look at the info on shared photos.  In fact I’ll share the album.

Hey Luverne,

I got the photos and played a bit. If you open the photo using the computer and click the i for info, you’ll see a link to “Where was this taken?” Click there and you can enter a named place. That works fine for Dawson City – not so much for a moose crossing the road. You have to type in something, you don’t see a map until after you attach the photo to a named place. Click the image below to see what I mean

You need to browse a map separately and decide on some named places that will at least put your photos on a map near where they were taken. But then the photo will show up in the new map view right away.

I don’t know what happened, but I reloaded the photos and now the option for where was this taken is available.  I think Google Photos likes to challenge me.  BTW this morning I finally have the new version on my phone, I’ll start looking a the map, that will be very interesting to me, especially if I can locate most of my photos.  Once again thanks for your help.
