I'm still trying to learn the new template designer. I've watched some of your videos, but haven't discovered my answers yet. The first issue is most likely a computer setting on my machine, I cannot view the preview in the bottom half of my screen while on the blogger template designer page. When I first open the designer, the preview shows up for about a second, and then just vanishes! The second issue is that readers must scroll a lonnnnnnnggggg way down before reaching some of my gadgets. I've tried rearranging columns, and changing the number of posts that appear on a page, but can't seem to fix that. And, finally, I can't find “header text” in the list of advanced options to change. The text size is way too big and I would like to change it. I'll keep looking for solutions, but any hints I can get here will be appreciated!
Ahhh….one problem solved! I found the culprit that was making my sidebar so very long! Every time I've updated “Our Current Location”, a few blank lines were somehow getting inserted ()! Now that I've found and deleted them all, everything fits nicely and readers no longer have to scroll forever to see all of my gadgets.
I may try another solution to the header text issue….
Now, if I could fix the preview window in the Template Designer, I'd be pretty happy.
Good Job! Thanks for letting us know about your blank lines.
As for your preview problem, I haven't heard of that but here's a couple things to try:
- Try refresh – With designer on the screen and trying to display preview, press Ctrl/F5 for refresh
- Try Expanding Preview – click the bar in the middle of the designer screen, right above where preview should be
- Try changing your screen resolution
- Try a different browser – if you're using Internet Explorer, try Firefox, or try Chrome – that's the free browser from Google – you may have best luck with that.
As for the Header text, I assume you mean the header of each post? First thing to know is that different templates have different options. So, if you select the 'Travel' template – when you click on 'Advanced' you will see an option for 'Post Title' where you can change the font. But, if you select the 'Picture Window' template – you won't have that option. On my template I find the font size option of the post title under the advanced option for Post.
If you want to stick with a template that doesn't provide the option you want, you'll need to mess with CSS. They've made that pretty easy too – in the template designer / Advanced – select the 'Add CSS' option. Here's the Blogger help page for adding CSS.
Thanks, Chris — I downloaded Chrome and I can see my preview now in Template Designer! Before I saw your reply, I set up a “test” blog and could see that one in IE. So, I guess there's something in my blog that IE “thinks” is dangerous and won't let it be seen in the preview screen. I'm not going to stress over that one any more, I'll just use Chrome.
I'm experimenting with the different templates, so I'll just continue to play until I like the result as far as colors, fonts and sizes, etc.
